Deaf pupils in the Central Region have blamed their poor performance at the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) on their examiners. The affected schools are the Cape Coast and Swedru Schools for the Deaf. The students of the two schools contend that their examiners are teachers of hearing students and hence never appreciate their communication challenges.
The students called on the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) to appoint teachers of the deaf to mark their papers. They said non-special educationists (examiners) are responsible for their poor performance because they do not understand the deaf students.
On her part, Jessica Nortey, a Pupil of Cape Coast School argues that inadequate support of deaf education account for the poor performance. Mr. Kwaku Nkrumah a teacher of Swedru School for the Deaf also said the condition in his school does not augur well for effective teaching and learning.
