ELECTRONIC VERSION OF THE DISABILITY ACT COMMISSIONED

The government has emphasized its commitment to the implementation of the national disability act. The Minister for education Mr. Alex Tettey-Enyo, gave the assurance at Akropong in the Eastern Region on 16th June 2009, when he launched the electronic versions of the Disability Act (715).

The program was aimed aimed at creating exposure for persons with disabilities especially the visually-impaired to know more about their rights. The electronic versions of the Disability Act and the CHRAJ Act 456 were produced in English, Ga, Ewe and Twi with funding from the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA).

Mr Tettey Enyo reiterated the government’s commitments to work towards developing a disability-friendly environment to accommodate all children, provide devices such as hearing aids, brail equipment, computers as well as sign language interpreters to aid the development of persons with disabilities.

Mr. Enyo said, his Ministry will team up with the Department of Social Welfare and the local/district assemblies to establish assessment centres in each district of the country to screen children for early identification of signs of disability.

“The challenge facing the school system was how to provide an effective education system for the vulnerable and marginalized persons and how to prepare them for comprehensive involvement in all endeavors for national development”, he concluded. The Minister called on all Ghanaians to contribute their quota in ensuring the recognition of the basic human right.

Mr. Richard Quayson, Deputy Commissioner of CHRAJ, said that the occasion confirms CHRAJ's dedication to the protection of rights of all persons especially and to create a free and just society where human dignity is protected.

Mr. Quayson emphasized that plans were underway to produce other electronic versions of the law to increase awareness about the provisions of the Disability Act. “This is to ensure that the disabled took better control of their lives and improve their capacity to contribute to the fight to eliminate oppressive social structures that encouraged exploitation and oppression” he concluded.
