As part of the 2009 celebration of the International Day of the Disabled, GFD hosted a disability awards to honor individuals and corporate bodies that have contributed immensely towards the cause of persons with disability (PWDs) in the country.

Among the awardees were five district and municipal assemblies that were considered to have significantly contributed to the mainstreaming of disability into their development agenda. The ceremony which took place at GNAT Hall in Accra, on Friday 3rd December saw Bongo, Asunafo South, Suhum district Assemblies receiving special awards meant to motivate district assemblies to give adequate attention to the concerns of PWDs. Birim Central and Kumasi Municipal Assembly were among the five local government bodies that received the awards.

In response to the honor, the district chief executives of the five assemblies expressed their appreciation to GFD for recognizing their efforts and promise to involve and address the concerns of persons with disabilities in the planning the development of their respective areas.
