Affirmative Parliamentary Seats Would Enhance Inclusion-------Debrah |
The First Vice President of GFD, Mr Yaw Ofori Debrah has re-emphasized on the need to grant affirmative parliamentary seats for Persons with Disability and Women. This according to the GFD deputy president would enhance a broader political participation and Inclusion at the National level.
To support the position, Mr Debrah cited the case of Uganda and other countries where PWDs and women are offered specificied number of seats at the National Parliament. Mr Debrah made the submission as part of GFD's proposed ammendments to the Constitiutional Review Commission.
In response to a question from Dr Raymond Atuguba, the lead counsel for the Commission, regarding the eact number of seats PWDs should be offered , Mr Debrah stressed that parlimament could decide upon the number based on the available statistics on the number of projected PWDs in the country in relation to the overall population.
On his part, Mr Samuel Kwesi Asare, the President of the GFD maintained that the ammended constitution must acknowledge sign language as an official means of communication and education in the country. Mr Asare explained that the deaf culture which include sign language is part of the overall national culture since the deaf persons froms part of the population.
In a closing remark the Chairman of the Commission Prof. Albert Fiadjoe assured the Federation that the CRC would give a fair consideration to the concerns of all Ghanaians. The Mini consultation on the proposed ammendement of the 1992 Constitution was held on 23rd August at the CRC secretariat at Cantoments in Accra.
