Joint DANIDA project: “strengthening the Disability Movement in Ghana through advocacy and capacity building”

This is a project funded by the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA).  The main objective is to “strengthening the Disability Movement in Ghana through advocacy and capacity building”.  It is an eighteen (18) month pilot project (July 2008 – December 2009) to be implemented in three (3) districts: Birim South and Manya Krobo (Eastern region), and Ho (Volta region). 
The primary target group for the project include the GFD, Ghana Association of the Blind (GAB) and Ghana Society of the Physically Disabled (GSPD). The persons targeted comprise in particular local and national leaders, key resource persons, OPWD committee members and PWDs carrying special responsibility in relation to advocacy and flow of information within the disability movement. Minimum 40 % of the targeted persons will be women.

 



Promoting the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Ghana

The Project dabbed “Promoting the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Ghana” is a year project (January – December, 2009) funded by the Disability Rights Fund.  The project aims to educate the Ghanaian society to be aware of and understand the tenets of the Convention on the rights of PWDs so as to support and push for its ratification by the government, creating visibility and mainstreaming disability.

The main thematic areas for implementation are:

  • Awareness-raising on the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
  • Building coalitions and networks to strengthen visibility and voice
  • Rights advocacy and monitoring

The Project is national in character but will be more focused on twenty (20) districts for most of its activities.  The districts include:

-  Upper East region: Bolgatanga municipality, Zibila District,
-  Upper West region: Wa Metropolis, Girapa District
-  Northern region: Tamale Metropolis
-  Ashanti Region: Kumasi Metropolis, Kwabre District, Afigya Sekyere
-  Eastern region: Atiwa District, Koforidua Municipality
- Brong Ahafo region: Sunyani Munipality, Berekum District, Wenchi District,
- Western region: Shama Ahanta East Metropolis, Prestea Bogoso District
- Volta region: Hohoe district, Akatsi dsitrict
- Central region: Cape Coast Municipality, Awutu Efutu Senyan District, Ajumako-Enjan-Essiem District
