The Electoral Commission (EC) has organized an educational campaign on the procedures for the conduct of the 2008 general elections for members of the Ghana Federation of the Disabled (GFD) in Kumasi.
The training manager of the NEC, Mr John Amihere emphasized that the program would boost the confidence of the GFD and eliminates the feeling of neglect on the part of the disabled. Mr Amihere urged the GFD to educate its members.
The gender and disability desk officer of the EC, Mrs Stella Abrokwa noted that if the persons with disabilities became more informed and active in electoral process, they would have confidence to agitate for policies that would improve their lives.
On her part, the executive director of the GFD Ms Rita Kyeremaa Kusi noted that the disabled have been facing numerous challenges during elections.
She cited inaccessibility to voting centers and lack of sign language interpreters as some of the concerns. She also urged the EC to provide tactile ballot papers to make voting more convenient for the blind. Ms Kusi finally expressed an appreciation to the EC for reaching the GFD with its education program and stress that the disability movement is content with the Commission’s initiative to address the concerns of persons with disabilities.
In a related development, the convention people party (CPP) has launched a Braille version of its manifesto at the Coconut Grove Hotel in Accra.
