                      GFD LAUNCHES GENDER POLICY

The Ghana Federation of the disabled has launched a gender policy in line with the strategic plan of the organization. Present at the launch of the program were members of the gender committee and other representatives from GFD member organizations.

At the launching of the policy at the Sun Lodge Hotel in Accra on 10th August, the vice president of the GFD Mr Yaw Debrah noted that the federation’s is committed to achieving to gender empowerment and equality among persons with disability. Mr Debrah added that females PWDs face double discrimination and marginalization in society on the basis of gender and disability.

The GFD Gender policy was developed through a series of stakeholders’ forums involving female and male members of the federation. The key objective of the policy is to mainstream gender and women's rights issues into all policies and programmes of member organizations. More specifically, the policy seeks to ensure greater consistency in gender practices in our member organizations and provides a framework against which all OPWDs can be accountable to ensuring gender integration.

In order to achieve the policy objective, GFD and its partner organizations will address gender issues in planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation. Gender issues will also reflect at all levels of decision making, workplace relationships and programming.
In order to ensure that women are proportionately represented at the governance and decision making levels in member organizations shall:

  • Make considerations for gender equality in the organizational structures of member organizations. Constitutions of OPWDs shall ensure at least 40% representation of women at the highest decision making levels.
  • Create a gender desk at the national secretariats of member organizations.
  • Form gender complaint committees at GFD Secretariat and its member organizations to address all gender concerns of members.

Among other things, the GFD gender policy is also sensitive to project planning, budgeting, implementation as well as monitoring and evaluation.
