Mr John Doherty an Irish teacher currently serving in the Cape Coast Municipality has called on the government to put in place the necessary measures that would ensure that Deaf schools in the country are provided with adequate teaching staff.
Mr Doherty noted that due to the lack of adequate teaching staff, the Cape Coast Municipality for instance has high illiteracy rate among deaf children. He pointed out that in Ireland the education system makes adequate provision for deaf students and call for a similar support in Ghana.
According to Mr Doherty, the obstacles to the education of the deaf include the lack of training for deaf teachers and the erroneous impression that the deaf cannot be thought. The hearing impaired Irish teacher also emphasize that literacy is the foundation to learning, and hence all children (including the disabled) should have equal access to it.
